7.5-magnitude earthquake strikes off Japan, tsunami alert issued

A 7.5-magnitude earthquake struck off the coast of Sanriku in northern Japan at 4:53 p.m. local time, with a depth of approximately 6 miles below the sea surface. A tsunami alert was issued following the seismic event.
