Foreshock-induced slip transients set mainshock nucleation timing

Researchers found that foreshocks can regulate mainshock nucleation timing through laboratory experiments using a rate-and-state-based Griffith-like rupture framework. Larger foreshocks generate higher transient sliding velocities and trigger a more rapid transition to dynamic rupture. The study was published in Nature on May 6, 2026.
