Luigi Mangione’s lawyers reverse course, say they won’t pursue a psychiatric defense

Luigi Mangione’s lawyers withdrew their planned psychiatric defense for his state murder trial, reversing a prior decision. The defense had aimed to claim extreme emotional disturbance at the time of the 2024 killing of UnitedHealthcare CEO Brian Thompson, which could have led to a manslaughter conviction. Mangione’s state trial begins Sept. 8, with a federal trial following on Oct. 13.
