France records around 1,000 additional deaths as extreme heat sets European records

France reported at least 1,000 additional deaths during a record-breaking heat wave, with over 1,400 deaths recorded on two consecutive days. The World Health Organization warned Europe is warming twice as fast as the global average, and a study linked the extreme heat to climate change, stating it is 200 times more likely today than 20 years ago.
