Melting mountains and returning floods — Swat’s climate emergency
Authorities issued a Glacial Lake Outburst Flood (GLOF) alert for Swat and northern Khyber Pakhtunkhwa due to accelerated glacier melt from rising temperatures, increasing risks of flash floods and landslides. The warning echoes past climate-related crises, including the destructive 2022 floods, which were exacerbated by urban expansion into floodplains and narrowed river channels.
