Contentious Basic Law on Torah study aimed at shielding draft evaders passes 1st reading

A controversial Basic Law aimed at protecting Torah study participants from military draft requirements passed its first reading in Israel. Four coalition MKs opposed the legislation, which faces sharp criticism from legal authorities, while opposition politicians pledged to repeal it if they form the next government.
