Coast guard increase patrol -- Here’s what boaters need to know before the Fourth of July weekend

The Coast Guard and local law enforcement in Michigan are increasing boating safety patrols during the Fourth of July weekend as part of Operation Dry Water, a nationwide campaign to enforce laws against boating under the influence (BUI). Since 2009, 7,453 operators have been removed for BUI, with alcohol identified as the leading factor in fatal boating accidents. Key safety tips include avoiding alcohol while boating, wearing life jackets, and taking safety courses.
