Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly

The second phase of Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) Legislative Assembly elections will be held on Sunday in nine Muzaffarabad division constituencies and 12 refugee constituencies, with over 340 candidates competing for 21 seats. Security measures include internet suspension and 1,483 polling stations in Muzaffarabad division and 1,057 in refugee areas, with 809,621 and 438,834 registered voters respectively.

Over 4,000 police personnel will be deployed for security during the Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly elections in Rawalpindi division on August 2. The elections for migrant seats include 175 polling stations across four constituencies, with strict security measures and categorization of stations as highly sensitive, sensitive, or normal.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir Legislative Assembly adopted resolutions condemning federal ministers' remarks on Rawalakot unrest and endorsing a Truth and Reconciliation Commission. The resolutions, tabled by Sardar Muhammad Yaqoob Khan and Chaudhry Muhammad Yasin, criticized Defence Minister Khawaja Asif for denying Rawalakot residents Kashmiri identity and urged free elections and dialogue to address violence.

1,265 nomination papers were submitted for AJK Legislative Assembly elections, a 30% increase from 2021. The submissions included 1,047 for territorial constituencies and 218 for refugee seats in Pakistan. Khawaja Muhammad Ahsan was sworn in as senior member of the AJK Election Commission.

The Azad Jammu and Kashmir (AJK) government issued a travel advisory from June 5 to June 20, urging outsiders to avoid the region and current visitors to leave before a protest by the Joint Awami Action Committee (JAAC) on June 9. The protest demands abolishing 12 Legislative Assembly seats reserved for refugees from Indian-occupied Jammu and Kashmir, a move opposed by the AJK government. Federal paramilitary troops have been deployed to prevent unrest following past violent clashes.
