The development of hyperscale AI data centers is beginning to shape local elections in Minnesota. MinnPost monitored six cities—Faribault, Farmington, Hermantown, Monticello, North Mankato, and Pine Island—finding that candidate filings there have increased compared with previous election years. This heightened participation means combined candidate numbers are higher than in any election over the last decade.

Flock cameras record license plate numbers across a nationwide network to assist law enforcement investigations, but the technology has faced scrutiny regarding privacy concerns and data misuse. In response to this backlash, multiple locations in Minnesota have reported instances of vandalism or are electing to end their use of the camera system. Consequently, a website is available allowing people to check if their vehicle’s information was captured in the database.

All eight of Winona’s Flock cameras were stolen after being cut down, with police investigating the thefts. Similar incidents have occurred in Duluth, Plymouth, Faribault, Edina, and Anoka County, part of a statewide trend of camera thefts and vandalism.

Justin Lee Campbell, 42, is charged with stealing a Flock camera from a Faribault intersection and attempting to dismantle it. Law enforcement found the camera at his property after a shop employee reported him bragging about the theft.

Authorities are searching for Ryan Featherly, a 33-year-old man last seen leaving Joe’s Sport Cafe in Faribault. He has not been located since and requires medication he cannot access. The public is urged to contact Faribault police with any information.

A Minnesota court paused Google's planned data center in Pine Island amid opposition from a citizen group, highlighting broader legal challenges against data centers in the state. Lawsuits, led by the Minnesota Center for Environmental Advocacy, allege inadequate environmental reviews and lack of public transparency in project approvals.

Faribault police launched a summer Impact Unit to prevent crime through proactive policing, mental health follow-ups, and community engagement. The unit, staffed by two officers including Ali Fillipi, has already addressed over 100 additional calls and is being considered for continuation beyond its pilot phase.

Faribault city council extended the environmental review for Archer Datacenters' project to March 31, 2027, following a Minnesota Court of Appeals ruling requiring more information on environmental impacts. The extension allows the developer to gather project-specific data for a 500,000-square-foot data center planned near 150th Street West and Acorn Trail.
