Thieves stole four works attributed to Antonello da Messina from the MuMe regional museum in Messina, Sicily, on the Italian Ferragosto holiday. The stolen items included three panels of the San Gregorio Polyptych and a Pietà panel, which were removed from an armored display case.

Thieves bypassed security systems at the MuMe regional museum in Messina and stole four works attributed to the painter Antonello da Messina during the Italian Ferragosto holiday. The missing artworks included parts of the San Gregorio Polyptych and a panel depicting the Pietà. Museum director Marisa Mercurio called the theft a tremendous loss for the art world.
