A deadly week on Maryland roads resulted in 8 fatalities, leading state agencies to issue a safety warning to drivers of all types. Since August began, total statewide deaths included six drivers, five motorcyclists, three passengers, and two pedestrians. Because motorcycle deaths are projected to match last year's total (49 as of Aug. 17), the Maryland Department of Transportation urged caution around motorcycles.

A portion of Interstate 97 in Anne Arundel County, Maryland, buckled due to extreme heat, causing concrete slabs and rebar to protrude across northbound lanes. Maryland Department of Transportation crews initially allowed traffic to use the median to bypass the damage, with delays expected through the holiday weekend. A similar incident occurred on Route 50 during a 2012 heat wave.

Prince George’s County leaders and developers announced a $340 million project called The Promenade at Lottsford near Largo Metro station, featuring 763 workforce housing units, retail spaces, and public gathering areas. The project aims to create 800 construction jobs and 150 permanent jobs, aligning with state transit and affordable housing goals.
