State Democratic officials are preparing for potential federal interference during midterms because Donald Trump questions election security and pushes for more federal involvement in local voting. Officials, like Washington state’s Democratic attorney general Nick Brown, are gearing up to fight potential intimidation or interference efforts in court against the federal government. To protect polling places, lawmakers have introduced new legislation while attorneys general prepare for worst-case scenarios of federal overreach.

The Caldwell County Elections Board has discussed plans to reduce polling locations across the county. This potential reduction involves decreasing the number of sites from 16 down to as few as 12, which represents an approximate 25% reduction.

The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated that Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) is not planning operations targeting polling locations during the midterm elections. A Senate letter from Democrats, led by Sen. Edward Markey, raised concerns about potential federal interference in elections, citing longstanding laws prohibiting armed agents at polling sites. The DHS response acknowledged that ICE conducts intelligence-driven enforcement but did not rule out actions if a public safety threat arises.

The FBI reports bomb threats have been made against polling locations across multiple states, with many originating from Russian email domains. No threats have been verified as credible at this time.
