Michigan’s Selfridge National Air Base receives big upgrades -- here’s what’s new

Michigan’s Selfridge National Air Base will receive 21 new F-15 Ex Eagle II Fighter Jets starting in 2028, replacing aging A-10 Warthogs. The base secured $152 million for runway and infrastructure upgrades as part of a $1 billion improvement plan, supporting 30,000 statewide jobs and contributing $850 million annually to Michigan’s economy. The base, located in Harrison Township, turns 109 on July 1 and was originally named Joy Aviation Field before being renamed after Thomas Selfridge, the first person killed in a military aircraft crash.
