Scientists have discovered a hidden signal in the nervous system that tells the brain when to stop scratching, centered on the molecule TRPV4. This discovery was made through experiments involving mice with chronic itch similar to eczema. The mice missing this signal scratched less often but couldn't stop when they did scratch.
