- Iran pushes for formal control over Strait of Hormuz
Iran seeks international recognition of its control over the Strait of Hormuz and the right to charge vessels passing through the Gulf. An interim agreement with the United States allows free passage for 60 days, but Iran claims the deal's wording still grants it authority over vessel access and routes. If the agreement expires without extension, Iran plans to start charging ships in mid-August and may enforce its position by force.
