Tanzania’s government banned political rallies ahead of planned anti-government protests targeting last year’s disputed election and the detention of opposition leader Tundu Lissu. The ban, issued by Internal Affairs Minister Patrobas Katambi and Police Inspector General Camillus Wambura, prohibits permits for political activities, drawing legal challenges from opposition parties and the Tanzania Law Society, which called the directive unconstitutional.
