El Niño is expected to impact oil sardine stocks in 2027, with warming intensifying from October–December and effects likely felt in the northern Indian Ocean by April–May 2027, according to the CMFRI Director.

A necropsy of an endangered Indian Ocean humpback dolphin found dead on Kozhikode beach revealed fatal ingestion of a plastic fishing net, underscoring the threat of marine plastic pollution and 'ghost nets'. CMFRI data indicate high marine mammal strandings, with coastal dolphins being particularly vulnerable.

CMFRI identified a new deep-sea fish species, Cyttopsis indica, in the Arabian Sea. The species was discovered at depths of 350 m to 500 m along the continental slope of the eastern Lakshadweep Sea.

A CMFRI study attributes the death of approximately 11 tonnes of fish, primarily pony fish, along a 1,500-metre stretch in Boyapadu to hypoxia caused by an algal bloom and oxygen depletion on the Anakapalli coast.

A mass fish die-off occurred in Boyapadu, prompting a Fisheries Department team and CMFRI scientists to collect fish and water samples for laboratory analysis. The post-mortem report is expected within days to determine the cause.
