Evacuations were ordered in Midtown after structural support beams buckled in an under-construction skyscraper at 235 East 42nd St., formerly the Pfizer building. A union representative accused developers of adding 16 stories without sufficient steel supports and using cheaper labor, leading to concerns of collapse. Nearby buildings, including the Hampton Inn, were evacuated.
