A five-year-old boy in Hong Kong died after being physically abused, confined, and starved by his mother, who later pleaded guilty to manslaughter and child cruelty. The boy weighed 9.7kg at death, half the normal weight for his age, and an autopsy revealed 129 injuries and starvation.

A Georgia father was sentenced to life in prison for the death of his 10-year-old daughter during a house fire. The girl had been sleeping on a wooden board in a windowless bathroom when the fire, started by her 15-year-old brother, killed her. The father's wife also pleaded guilty to child cruelty charges and will serve 90 years in prison.
